Temples in the Land Of Saints and Yogis, Himachal Pradesh

October 16, 2017

Famous as the Dev Bhoomi, the land of Himachal Pradesh lives up to its name. Abode of the Gods, there are over 2000 Hindu temples that spread across the mountains peaks and elevations as high as 3500 meters above the sea level. Thousands of devotees, both locals and outsiders throng these temples to pay homage to the famous Hindu Lords, especially Lord Shiva, whose love for the mountains has always remained apparent.

There's not a hill or a village, which does not boast of hosting Hindu shrines and temples that celebrate mythological episodes. From local temples devoted to the Devi Devtaas (patron gods and goddesses) to larger shrine dedicated to prominent Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Some of these temples date back to as old as 9th century. They have survived through the ravages of enemy invasions, fought through natural calamities such as earthquakes. They passed the tests of time, and still stand proud, to welcome devotees from across the country. The Bajeshwari Temple in Kangra district is an example of such a temple, which was destroyed in 1905 by a massive earthquake, and rebuilt in 1920.

The oldest and biggest temple in Himachal Pradesh, Laxmi Narayan temples nestles in Chamba district. Not only is the temple a religious center, but also a glorious work of architecture. The main deities of the six stone temples are lord Shiva and Vishnu. Other shrines are dedicated to Radha and Krishna, Gauri Shankar and other Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

The next in line is the Naina Devi temple, which is a famous tourist spot in Himachal Pradesh and holds immense religious importance. Located in the district of Bilaspur, the temple is one of the Shaktipeeths, where eyes from the corpse of Sati fell, and so it got christened as Naina Devi.

Manimahesh the highest temple in the state, situated on the banks of Manimahesh Lake, at an altitude of 4080 meters above the sea level, it is the legendary abode of Shiva. Following Janmashtami, the annual Manimahesh Yatra is organized. Pilgrims start from Chamba and traverse through an arduous track from Bharmaur to reach the lake, where they take a holy dip in the waters of the lake, and carry forward their journey to the temple.

Apart from the above, travel in Himachal to discover other famous temples, such as Jwalamukhi Temple, Chamunda Devi Temple, Hadimba temple, Jakhu temple, Chintpurni temple, and many others are visited by devotees in large numbers. Although visited throughout the year, it is during festivals and special celebrations when these temples become lively with prayers.

Shawls - What is a Kullu Shawl?

October 13, 2017

The Kullu shawl, as the name suggests, has its origin from the stunning mountain region of Himachal Pradesh. The motifs and designs of this wrap woven today owes their origin to intricate Kinnauri designs, the making of which has been enhanced to bring about more vibrant colors and the process has been simplified.

Thus the time and labour involved in the making of each piece has been reduced considerably and became available at a comparatively lower cost, which has led to the increase in demand. It is available in Pashmina, Angora, handspun and wool materials. The yarn used is either vegetable dyed or chemically dyed.

This famous stole has evolved from pattu which is the traditional outfit of this valley. The three meter hand woven wool attire is worn by the women like a tunic. Even today, many women wear pattu on top of their pajamas.

The Kullu shawl is available at effervescent patterns and designs. It can be well described as the melange of economy and ethnicity. It is categorized by a mould of gaudy, rich and glitzy colors. The finer and softer quality of materials is used in producing this. To proffer a more traditional look, local patterns of Himachal Pradesh are endowed in these shawls.

Although this wrap is coarser than the Pashmina, the world-class designs and patterns have led to a stupendous demand for it. It is now available in subtle colors. The Kullu wool wrap is always hand-woven, either by women working in cooperatives or by individuals. If you come across any machine-woven piece, then these are not the original ones. They are likely to be brought in from Punjab.

Kullu shawls display the lustrous and astounding customary prototype of Himachal Pradesh. It also exhibits the regional flora and fauna pattern along with the embroidered floral patterns. This is not very costly, yet it is amazingly elegant, fashionable and stylish. A piece can cost anything between $10 and $50. Pure Kullu Pashmina shawls are available at $100, whereas, Pashmina wool pieces are available for $70.

Kullu shawls looks extremely stunning with flamboyant mould and colors. They are perfect to match up with any attire with their bright and rich hues. It is worn not only for day to day use, but also on special occasions like anniversaries and weddings. As per the legend, this shawl is said to bring good luck and prosperity. It is a symbol of wealth, success and opulence.

October 9, 2017

Himachal Pradesh is land of Gods and Goddesses and encloses in numerous temples and shrines in its premises. One of most famous and highly visited sacred places is "Baijnath Temple" which lies in the Dhauladhar range in the western part of the Himalayas. Baijnath basically is a name of a small town situated in the district of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh and is located almost 51 kilometers away from Dharamshala. This town is situated almost in the middle of the way of the two towns of Kangra and Mandi.

It is here in Baijnath town that the 13th century constructed ancient Shiva Temple "Baijnath" is situated which is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Vaidyanath epitome which means "the lord of physicians" and because of this fact, the water of this sacred temple is thought to have medicinal properties that can cure ailments which brings millions of people here every year. Since its construction in the year 1204 A.D., the Baijnath temple has been worshiped continuously. It is believed that the temple existed here even before the construction of the current temple and evidence of this are the two long inscriptions that are on the porch of the temple.

The temple holds a great importance in the Hindu religion and it's believed that the Shivlinga, which is found in Svayambhu form with five projections on all sides and is roofed by a Shikhara, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas as per the legends. It is believed that the Shivlinga of this temple was established here by a trick played by Devas for deceiving revenue.

Every morning and evening here witness special prayers which are offered to the deity besides special occasions and festivals. Maha -Shivaratri is celebrated every year at this temple and a state level function is organized for five days. Along with is a number of other sacred days are celebrated with great enthusiasm and majesty which include Makara Sankranti, Shravana Mondays, Vaisakha Sankranti etc.
